Historic Masonry Restoration in Richmond, VA

Before and after lime mortar repointing by Richmond Masonry

Richmond's older homes are full of character, from traditional brick walls and chimneys to stone steps and front stoops. At Richmond VA Masonry, we specialize in lime-based mortar and in restoring brick and stonework in a way that respects the original materials, for homes throughout Richmond, including the Fan and the Museum District.

Lime-Based Mortar: Our Specialty

Many historic buildings were built with softer brick and lime-based mortar. Modern Portland cement mortar is much harder and less breathable. Put hard mortar in soft, older brick and it traps moisture and stresses the brick around it. That's why we specialize in lime-based mortar: it suits older brick and stone, protects the original materials, and keeps the building's character intact.

Lime Mortar Repointing

Over time, mortar joints weather, crumble or fall away, leaving gaps between the bricks. We carefully remove the deteriorated mortar and replace it with lime-based mortar suited to the brickwork, paying attention to color, texture and joint finish so the repair blends in with the rest of the house.

Brick and Stone Repair

Where bricks need replacing, we match the existing size, color and character as closely as possible. Loose natural stone can be lifted, cleaned and reset on a suitable mortar bed, with damaged pieces replaced where needed. We also restore brick steps, stoops and walls.

Chimney Masonry Repairs

Chimneys take the most weather, especially near the top. We repair chimney masonry and repoint open or washed-out joints so the chimney is sound again.

Careful Restoration From Start to Finish

We inspect the masonry first, because cracks, loose brick and damp patches can have different causes, including moisture or movement. We use proper access and scaffolding where needed, and when the work is done we remove excess materials and debris and leave the area clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my older brick home need lime mortar?

Many older Richmond homes were built with softer brick and lime-based mortar. Hard cement mortar traps moisture and can damage the surrounding brick. We specialize in lime-based mortar that suits the original brickwork.

What are the signs my masonry needs attention?

Crumbling or missing mortar, loose bricks, flaking brick faces, cracks in walls, chimneys or front steps, loose stones on a stoop or walkway, and damp patches around masonry.

Can you match my existing brick?

Yes. When bricks need replacing, we match the existing size, color and character as closely as possible.
