Brick Walkway Installation and Repair

A brick walkway suits older Richmond homes and sits well beside brick steps, walls and porches. We lay new brick walks in patterns such as running bond, herringbone and basketweave, and we can match the brick and pattern to what's already on your property where suitable brick is available.

Older brick walks often sink, heave or loosen over time, usually because of the base, drainage or tree roots underneath. We find the cause first, then lift and reset the affected section on a properly prepared base, replacing broken bricks where needed. We'll tell you plainly whether a repair or a rebuild makes more sense.

Bluestone and Limestone Options

Bluestone comes in cut rectangular pieces for a neat, regular pattern, or in irregular flagstone shapes for a more natural look. Its blue-gray to lilac tones work well with brick houses.

Limestone gives a softer, lighter look and is available in cut pieces for patios and walkways.

Color, finish and thickness vary by supplier and batch. At your estimate we'll show you options and talk through which suits your walkway or patio.

Natural Stone Patios and Walkways

We install all kinds of natural stone: bluestone, flagstone, limestone and fieldstone. Every piece is different, so each job is laid out by hand to suit the stone and the site. Whether it's a front walk, a garden path or a full patio, we lay all of that.

How We Build It

dr5.jpg

Every patio and walkway starts with the same groundwork:

1. Layout and grade: we agree the design and set the finished height with a slight slope away from the house so surface water runs off.

2. Excavation: we dig out to allow for the base, the bedding layer and the paving.

3. Compacted base: crushed-stone aggregate laid in layers, each one compacted.

4. Drainage: we check where water will go and allow for it in the slope and base before laying anything.

Then the method depends on the material:

Concrete pavers: laid on a screeded sand bed, held with edge restraints, then compacted with polymeric sand swept into the joints.

Brick: either laid on a sand bed over the compacted base with secure edging, or set in mortar on a concrete slab, depending on the site and the look you want.

Flagstone and bluestone: either dry-laid on stone dust or fine gravel over the compacted base, or mortar-set on a concrete slab for a fixed, mortared joint.

We'll explain which method we recommend for your job and why before work starts.
